Safe Riding in your City

Cargo Bikes

Riding a bicycle is an excellent means to get short distances, but sometimes riding in an urban setting can be dangerous. If you are going to be riding a bicycle in a city, whether a cargo bike, three-wheeled bike, or traditional upright bike, it is the responsibility of the rider to be ever vigilant for their safety.

  1. Before taking out your bike, you should read up on state or city biking laws. For instance, can you ride on sidewalks? Can you legally pass cars on the left? Knowing local codes of conduct will help keep you safe on the road.
  2. Worry about your body and not fashion and what looks good. Many people do not wear helmets because they do not like the way they look in the helmet or what it does to their hair. Even the best riders can have accidents, and it is incredibly important to protect your head. You may also want to consider clothing that will make falls to the ground less damaging.
  3. Ride defensively and also assume you are not seen. Constantly look around and be aware of your surroundings. Don't just watch for cars because in the big cities pedestrian traffic can be worse.
  4. Get the proper reflective and night gear for your bike. You might not like the way these types of products look on your bike, but at least your bike is being seen. Make yourself visible and known on the streets.

Cargo Bikes

It does not matter what type of bike you ride (cargo bike or three wheeled bike). The thing that should matter is how you ride that bike. Be safe and aware when riding your bike in any populated area.
