Safety Tips for Riding in NYC

Owning a cargo bike in NYC is a very wise and economic choice.  Most cyclists end up saving a large percentage of their annual income by using a bike instead of an automobile or public transportation. Although biking in NYC is a wise ergonomic plan, it has some inherent risks associated with the activity.

NYC is a city that was designed to accommodate the automobile, not the cargo bike. This means that the roads are equipped to handle a large amount of car traffic, without providing adequate space for cyclists. Many of the bike lanes in the city are unprotected, which means that cyclists are exposed to direct contact with large vehicles. In order to stay safe it is important to be visible, and obey the rules of the road.

When you are biking, especially at night, you should always wear bright colors, reflective gear, and lights that illuminate your person and alert drivers of your presence on the road.  In addition you should always use the appropriate hand gestures to signal if you are stopping or turning left or right.

The last suggestion to remain safe while biking is to always wear a helmet. Head injuries are one of leading causes of death for cyclist.
