Google Maps now Plans Bike Routes

Riding biking in an urban setting can be challenging and dangerous as a result of heavy pedestrian and automotive traffic. Many cities throughout the United States are growing their bicycle culture through creating more cycle friendly streets. How does one know how to find the best streets or the best route to commute? Google Maps has recently added bike directions, along with the car, public transport, and walking. Finding a safe and easy bike path is as easy as typing in two destinations.

Go to Google Maps through a web browser and click the cyclist logo. Google Maps will calculate different routes to choose from based on three main criteria: bike friendly streets, relatively flat roads, and quickest way.

When looking at the directions, you will see three types of lines:

  1. Dark green: this represents roads or paths that have no car traffic. This can be a bike lane in a park or on a boardwalk.
  2. Light green: this represents city streets that have cars and clearly marked bike lanes.
  3. Dashed lines: these streets do not have designated bike lanes, but they are wide enough for both cars and bikes.

Google Maps are making biking more accessible for both avid riders and those who are looking to start. This site is especially perfect for those riding non-traditional bikes, like three wheeled bikes, cargo bikes, and adult tricycles. Enjoy your next ride!
